I was cursed to have hair that is poker straight and grows straight out of my head. There is no bend, whatsoever. Imagine the roof on an A Frame house - that is my untouched hair. It's been cut, dyed, teased, highlighted, shellacked, permed, unpermed, braided, shaved...not to mention thousands of dollars spent on products. It's basically a work in progress. I think it is fair to say everyone has a love/hate relation with their hair. If you don't, we have nothing in common and will never be able to converse in small talk.
My life has been an endless parade of famous haircuts - everything from the Toni Tennille to the Dorothy Hamill to the Markie Post mullet to the never changing Lisa Rinna. I've also tried androgyny - if anyone remembers the 80's version of Darryl Hall which then grew nicely into the hair style for the lead singer of Kajagoogoo...Limalh.
One year my only goal was to French braid my hair. I wore it braided to a Marine Corps ball. It wasn't nearly as thrilling as I expected. The next week I cut it all off in an ill advised Demi Moore Ghost haircut. Oops!
Add to that list, with varying degrees of success, Chelsea Kane, Demi Lovato, Joan Jett, Meg Ryan, Joan Lunden, and in an questionable moment, Pink.
It's very important to mention - my hair was cut with pictures and visuals of these celebrities. It does not mean I left the salon with said haircut, or if the haircut was successful, I was able to maintain any of them! I cannot confirm nor deny if things like texture, color, age and face shape were factored in.
There is an actress named Romy Rosemont that seems to appear in everything. Every time I see her, I think "I like her hair." It's short and sassy and everything I need in a style. The problem? I currently live in super small town USA. I don't think my hair stylist would have a clue who she is by just her name. Romy has been in a lot of tv shows and movies - and you would recognize her - but maybe not the name. Although the alliteration of the Rs is beautiful. She was Finn's mom on Glee, if that helps. I most recently saw her on Better Things, an awesome show on FX, but it doesn't get enough attention - and again, I thought - I love her hair.
So, do I walk in the the salon and just say "Give me the Romy Rosemont?"
I asked a few stylist their oddest hair requests. Many did not have strange customer desires, but they were full of Jennifer Aniston, Meg Ryan and Farrah Fawcett requests. Currently, according to several stylists, light platinum blonde is a popular shade, but not easy to duplicate for brunettes. Think Kim Kardashian or Khaleesi from Game of Thrones.
One stylist mentioned a client asking for a Nancy Grace haircut, and a stylist in NC laughingly told me about an older client that brought in a 20 year old picture of Paige Davis from Trading Spaces. (I did The Paige, too. She was adorable!) Another stylist said a woman requested a Marilyn Manson hairstyle, complete with picture, thank goodness, while another remembered a client asking for a short hair Michael Jackson look. Apparently I'm not the only one dabbling in androgyny!
My favorite stylist request story involves a porn video brought in by the client so the stylist could duplicate the female lead's hair. I feel for the client - she didn't know if the "celebrity" was famous enough to ask for her hair style!
I felt I needed to take the odd hairstyle question to the street. I knew I couldn't be the only one with offbeat requests. I asked friends and fielded two Facebook groups. Answers varied but unique requests included Gwyneth Paltrow's short pixie from the movie Sliding Doors. Alleged pimp Ghislaine Maxwell and Rielle Hunter (mistress of Senator John Edwards) were both mentioned. Kelly McGillis in Top Gun. Lisa Lisa from Cult Jam. Jo from Facts of Life. I also wasn't the only one asking for Dorothy and Toni!
In my research, so far, no one has asked for the Romy Rosemont. It's either request the Romy Rosemont with a picture or it might be easier to wait for the return of the mullet! No picture needed!
Do you have a unique hairstyle request? I'd love to hear about it!
